Breathe in the Beauty of Colorado

A few summers back, we left the sticky Missouri heat behind for the fresh air and cool nights of Colorado Gold Country. Hiking, history, sunshine—it was all there. One of our favorite stops was the Broadmoor Manitou Cog Railway, which winds its way up to the summit of Pikes Peak. Built in 1891, the cog-wheel train clanks and climbs more than 14,000 feet—a ride that feels like stepping back in time.

As scenic as it was, the altitude was no joke. I managed to hop off at the summit gift shop, but my husband David stayed put, feeling faint from the elevation. Fortunately, he perked up once we started the descent—around 10,000 feet, in fact.
